'Monstrous births' and the making of race in the nineteenth-century United States
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/09/230907130307.htm
From the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, 'monstrous births' -- malformed or anomalous fetuses -- were, to Western medicine, an object of superstition. In 19th-century America, they became instead an object of the 'modern scientific study of monstrosity,' a field formalized by French scientist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. This clinical turn was positioned against the backdrop of social, political, and economic activity that codified laws governing slavery, citizenship, immigration, family, wealth, and access to resources.

Air pollution has decreased across the US, but new research finds health burdens remain unequal among racial groups
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/09/230901124045.htm
Health benefits that have resulted from reductions in fine particulate air pollution aren't distributed equally among populations in the U.S., a new Yale-led study finds. Racial and ethnic minorities -- and Black people in particular -- still experience disproportionately high rates of cardiovascular disease-related deaths caused by exposure to fine particulate matter, according to the research.

A new study found that more than half of people who own dogs expressed some level of canine vaccine hesitancy -- i.e. skepticism about vaccinating their pets against rabies and other diseases. An estimated 45 percent of US households own a dog; according to the survey results, nearly 40 percent of dog owners believe that canine vaccines are unsafe, more than 20 percent believe these vaccines are ineffective, and 30 percent consider them to be medically unnecessary.

A new way to evaluate the impact of medical research
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/08/230814174519.htm
A new study suggests that the 'impact factor' used to evaluate scientific journals and research papers does not accurately capture the impact of medical papers on health outcomes for all patients, particularly those in low or middle-income countries. As an alternative, the researchers developed a metric that they call the 'diversity factor.' Evaluating articles and journals using a new 'diversity index' could promote a wider range of perspectives and better global health outcomes, researchers say.

Researchers propose a data-driven strategy to stratify risk of progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/08/230804123659.htm
The projected cost of caring for millions of individuals who have Alzheimer's disease (AD) worldwide will exceed a $1 trillion in a few years. In addition to the enormous health burden, patients and their caregivers experience financial, physical and psychological strain. A theory regarding repeated drug failure in AD is that patients undergoing experimental therapies are selected too late in the disease process. Therefore, it is important to identify patients at a high risk of progression to AD in early stages of the disease. To help identify persons who could benefit from early interventions, researchers from Boston University have developed a deep learning framework that can stratify individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) based on their risk of advancing to AD.

Researchers found opioids were responsible for more than half of all fatal poisonings in children ages 5 and younger, more than double the proportion of fatal poisonings caused by opioids in 2005. Additionally, over-the-counter drugs still contribute to fatal poisonings in this age group despite increased regulation.

To promote exercise, planners must look beyond cities
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/02/230227132453.htm
To encourage more active lifestyles, public health agencies recommend mixed-use neighborhoods and 'complete' streets that are friendlier to walkers and bikers, but new research finds that while those strategies increase physical activity, an urban bias limits their applicability in many parts of the country.

Paying family members for at-home medical care of their children found to be a viable answer to healthcare worker shortage
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/02/230221180107.htm
A recent study found that a Medicaid program in Colorado can help address the shortage of home healthcare workers for children with complex medical needs by offering family members certified nursing assistant (CNA) training and paying them for at-home medical care their child requires. Results show that children who received family-CNA care were not more likely to be hospitalized than children cared for by a non-family CNA. Children with family-CNA caregivers also experienced greater care continuity since turnover was not an issue as it tends to be with traditional home healthcare workers.

How long people live is less predictable and life expectancy for young people can be as much as 14 years shorter in violent countries, compared to peaceful countries, according to a new study. It reveals a direct link between the uncertainty of living in a violent setting, even for those not directly involved in the violence, and a 'double burden' of shorter and less predictable lives.
