Fiber discovery could shape better gut health
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/02/230216172214.htm
Changing the structure of a dietary fiber commonly found in a range of food products has been found to promote healthy gut bacteria and reduce gas formation, a finding that could help people with intolerances to fiber and irritable bowel conditions.

//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/01/230119112824.htm
People with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have lower bacterial diversity in the intestine than do healthy people, according to a team of investigators. The investigators believe that theirs is the first analysis to find a clear association between IBS and reduced diversity in the microbiota of the gut.

Realtime monitoring with a wearable device reveals IBS-related changes
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2023/01/230112090916.htm
A research group recorded the autonomic nervous system activity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and healthy subjects using a wearable device and a proprietary smartphone application to record daily life events such as defecation and sleep. As a result, they found that sympathetic nervous system activity was activated in IBS patients from 2 minutes before defecation and continued until 9 minutes after defecation. Further research is expected to improve the quality of life of IBS patients and elucidate the pathophysiology.

Treating gut pain via a Nobel prize-winning receptor

Targeting a receptor responsible for our sense of touch and temperature, which researchers have now found to be present in our colon, could provide a new avenue for treating chronic pain associated with gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. A team examining the colon identified the presence of Piezo2, the subject of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, now known to be responsible for sensing light touch on our skin.

Many IBS sufferers avoid certain types of food and often exclude gluten. However, a large new study does not show a relationship between high intake of gluten and increased IBS symptoms. The researchers did find that a certain type of carbohydrate called 'fodmaps' can aggravate intestinal problems, however, the overall results indicate that they also have less influence than previously thought.

Seeking a treatment for IBS pain in tarantula venom
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2021/06/210623130711.htm
For patients who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the condition is literally a pain in the gut. Chronic -- or long-term -- abdominal pain is common, and there are currently no effective treatment options for this debilitating symptom. In a new study, researchers identify a new potential source of relief: a molecule derived from spider venom. In experiments with mice, they found that one dose could stop symptoms associated with IBS pain.

Sinister blastocystis: A clandestine killer of good bacteria revealed

A study has revealed an insidious aspect of the gut protozoan Blastocystis, which is largely thought to be a harmless commensal organism. A Singaporean subtype of Blastocystis, ST7, caused the destruction of 'good' bacteria in the gut through activating reactive oxidative species. ST7 also caused damage to the gut epithelial lining. This discovery has implications for inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal cancers, and fecal microbiota transplantation.

Gut microbes linked to brain structure in people with irritable bowel syndrome
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2017/05/170505151656.htm
Research shows for the first time an association between the gut microbiota and the brain regions involved in the processing of sensory information from their bodies. Also, the researchers gained insight into the connections among childhood trauma, brain development and gut microbiome composition.

Intestinal bacteria alter gut and brain function, study shows
//www.koonmotors.com/releases/2017/03/170301142503.htm
The goal of a new study was to explore whether fecal microbiota from human IBS patients with diarrhea has the ability to influence gut and brain function in recipient mice. Using fecal transplants, researchers transferred microbiota from IBS patients with or without anxiety into germ-free mice. The mice went on to develop changes both in intestinal function and behavior reminiscent of the donor IBS patients, compared to mice that were transplanted with microbiota from healthy individuals.
